ARE HUNTERS OVERGUNNED?-SHOTGUN-J. O'CONNOR ...For a long time the shotgun I used was a Long Tom pump, a 12 gauge ...thirty-two inch barrel...'full'...On passing shots I was way above average...close shots, let's forget that...Just married...bought for the wife a little double 20 gauge....26-inch barrels bored improved-cylinder and modified...it was a toy...I thought suited to the use of...young...fragile female...one day...I...set out to try it...quail... ... I killed eight straight...missed two...killed three more...missed one..ran out the limit....that experience did teach me...I had been badly overgunned. | OUTDOOR LIFE | Jan-41 |
LEARNING TO USE A SHOTGUN-J. O'CONNOR Q. I...buy a Model 12 Winchester, 16 gauge...What barrel length...? A. ...The 16 gauge...my favorite gauge....I'd have that barrel only 26 in. long... | OUTDOOR LIFE | Aug-41 |
YOUR SHOTGUN MUST FIT YOU-J. O'CONNOR To my way of thinking every good gun should have a beavertail forend...The conventional ...fore-end doesn't have a great deal more to grab hold of...than the handle of a tea-cup...making the gunner the gunner and his gun all of one piece...is a good pistol grip, one a man can hang onto. ...Straight grip guns are...far handsomer...But...when it comes to ease of controlling the gun...the straight grip doesn't even belong in the same league with the homely pistol grip. include photos | OUTDOOR LIFE | Dec-41 |

ONE SHOTGUN FOR ALL JOBS-16 GAUGE-J. O'CONNOR Me? I like doubles, pumps, and small dames....specifications for that all-around gun. It should be light enough so that it can be carred all day...and...heavy enough so it will carry through on a swing at passing doves and ducks....with a gun weighing around 7 lb., no mor than 7 1/2 and...less than 6 3/4 lb...Barrels...should be...from 26 to 28 in. for doubles...The man who fancies the double can get an extra pair of barrels...one set bored improved-cylindar (40-45 percent)...right barrel...modified (60-65 percent)...left...other set...bored modified and full (60-65 percent and 70-75 percent). | OUTDOOR LIFE | Aug-43 |
20 GAUGE FOR PHEASANTS-SHOOTERS' PROBLEMS-J. O'CONNOR Q...wondering if a variable choke would make (my 20) as good a gun for pheasant as my 12? JOC ...your 20 gauge would be adequate for any hunting you would do...full choked 12 out ranges a full-choked 20 by only about 10 yd. | OUTDOOR LIFE | Oct-43 |

WHAT SHOTGUN FIT MEANS-J. O'CONNOR I shoot his (a friend) gun better than (mine). These two guns measure exactly the same-drop at comb, 11/2", drop at heal, 2 in., length of pull 14", down pitch 1", lenght of barrels 26"...But probably the main factor is that his gun is 1/2 lb. heavier than mine. I'm too "strong" for my own gun, tending to overcontrol it. | OUTDOOR LIFE | Jul-44 |

UPLAND SHOOTING YOU NEED A FAST LIGHT SHOTGUN, FOR-J. O'CONNOR There is no better upland gun than a good double. Because it is not complicated by a heavy receiver, the gun's weight comes between the shooter's hands. If the barrels are not too long, the arm is muzzle-light and lively. The double skeet guns turned out by Winchester...with their short barrels, open boring, good stocks, and beavertail forends are just ideal for the uplands...The beavertail foreand is a very valuable feature, since it puts the left hand out where it can swing the muzzle fast. | OUTDOOR LIFE | Sep-47 |

PHEASANT, GUNS AND LOADS FOR-J. O'CONNOR photo: JOC ...considers a fast-handling double, such as this Winchester Model 21 in 16 gauge, a classic for the uplands. ...the pheasant has to be taken fast, and the short barreled, somewhat muzzle-light gun is the ticket. This last season I did most of my pheasant shooting with a Model 21 Winchester 12 gauge...two sets of 26-in barrels for it, one set bored Skeet No.1...and Skeet No. 2, ...the other bored modified and improved modified...with the load I ordinarily use, pattern 58 and 68 percent respectively. GUNS FOR PHEASANT-J. O'CONNOR photo Jack, Mike and 3-Inch 21. Deadliest pheasant gun I've ever used is a Winchester Model 21 double....two sets of 26-in. barrels...bored modified and improved modified...Skeet No.1 right and Skeet No. 2 left....Mostly I use the gun with the tighter-choked barrels. It's fine pheasant medicine, and with it I've shot as many as 20 cocks without a miss....But...after I've been using that gun every day for a couple of weeks, I run into a stretch of lousy shooting...I'm tired...gun seems heavy...I...rid of my miseries by shifting to a 20 gauge Model 21...bored with 3-Inch chambers...for the 20 gauge Magnum shell...My...20 gauge Winchester Model 21 Magnum with its 26-in. barrels is probably about the nearest thing to perfect pheasant gun I have. With the 1-oz. load of No. 6 in 2 3/4-in. cases in the right barrel I get 65 percent patterns at 40 yard. I generally take with me some shells...with the 1 1/8 oz. of No. 6 in 3-in. cases. If I miss with the first barrel, or have a chance for a double, I cut loose with the heavier load in the full choke barrel. | OUTDOOR LIFE | Oct-57 |

jo'c was a hunter first, gun crank second-hence he had the gun built with a bt-forend and pistol grip even though he thought they made the gun homly. performance, the ability to kill what he shot at was paramount, as it should be.
